Tuning Out the Mainstream News by Robert Hamburger

This is my favorite quote of the week:

  • At the bottom of the news food chain is Fox News. Fox is the distraction that has succeeded in getting the “have nots” to support policies that benefit the rich, the Christian Right to believe in the need to bomb others, and patriots to ignore our Constitution.

The author talks about not paying much attention to the so-called news-media. This is a good idea for many reasons, among which are tuning them out for health reasons. I grew up with parents who were expert consumers of news programming. I ate dinner to the tune of Walter Cronkite announcing the day’s body count in Viet Nam. I didn’t need to know that and neither did they. We should have left the Vietnamese settle their own problems but we still haven’t learned that lesson.

For some very good reasons why TV news is a joke or at most badly done entertainment read “Amusing Ourselves to Death” by Neil Postman. Then go out and kill your television set.
